To help you choose which one to invest in, I tried and tested a selection of flasks that promise to keep your beverages colder and hotter for longer, measuring how much heat was retained or how cool they kept respectively over a period of 12 hours.

Since the American manufacturer, Thermos, came to fame, the term has become slang for vacuum-insulated flasks. Although the terms are largely interchangeable, the original scientific phrasing is 'vacuum flask'. The wide mouth means it’s also suitable for soups and smoothies to take to work, and it will certainly keep them either sufficiently cold or hot until lunchtime. It's available in a range of colours, which is fun, from canary yellow to baby blue via three shades of pink. Another advantage of stainless steel it that does not leave a metallic taste in the mouth or residual odours. However, it is always worth cleaning your flask thoroughly with hot soapy water between uses.

Other useful design features to look for include a wide mouth, which makes for easier cleaning and filling (especially if you want to add ice cubes to your flask). In addition, many larger flasks incorporate ‘twist and pour’ spouts, so you can pour from the flask without having to completely remove the stopper. An integrated cup is also useful. Smaller flasks often feature lid designs that allow on-the-go swigging or one-handed operation. Capacity: 1 litre (33oz) / Temperature test: 0 hrs 90°c, 90 mins 85.5°c, 4 hrs 79.1°c, 6 hrs 74.3°c, 8 hrs 69.9°c, 24 hrs 44.5°c / Made of food grade 18/8 stainless steel that doesn’t impart or retain flavour / Lid doubles as a mug ensuring you always have a cup handy / Silicon sleeve / Drinking stopper opens and closes with a slight turn / Additional standard stopper for optimum heat retention included / Tapered design for easier handling / Large mouth opening is easy to fill and clean. BUY NOW: PRIMUSEQUIPMENT.COM FUNCTIONAL DESIGN + CLEVER ENGINEERING - The body is entirely made of high-quality 304 food safe stainless steel - Incredible capacity of 1000 ml ensures sufficient volume for long days. The cups are a joy to hold in the hand thanks to the ergonomic handle. Dimensions: Body Ø 11 cm x 30.8 cm height. Weight: 790g. If you want to carry your flask long distances, it’s a lightweight option – weighing 400g (14 ounces) with canteen cap, or 380g (13.4 ounces) with sports cap, while empty. So, whether you're planning on travelling the world or exploring closer to home, we have what you need for your next ADVENTURE.

Key attributes: Very light, design enables one-handed drinking, wide mouth for easy filling and cleaning. How do Thermos flasks work? In short, they use a double walled construction, with the air removed from between these walls, forming a vacuum. Heat struggles to pass through the vacuum, meaning liquid stays at a roughly constant temperature. However, it is durable and robust and does come with a lifetime warranty. It weighs 723g, and if the environment is your number one priority, it’s still functional enough. Happy camping. One of its aims is to reduce the amount of plastic going into the ocean by encouraging the use of a steel bottle, so it is proudly 100pc BPA free. My hot water was 91.3°C at 8:36pm; at 8:36am it was 75.7°C – a temperature drop of 15.6°C after 12 hours (not that much more than the Stanley, and still piping hot enough for a decent brew). My cold water was 4.4°C at 11:13am, and as with the Stanley, 12 hours later it was even colder – at 1.7 °C.

Stanley Classic 25oz Bottle

KAAVE THERMO SHIELD | 24h Hot / 36h Cold - Outstanding insulating properties of the highest level due to the copper coating in the double-wall vacuum design. Always THE PERFECT TEMPERATURE all day long. Capacity: 500ml / Temperature test: 0 hrs 90°c, 90 mins 89.3°c, 4 hrs 82.8°c, 6 hrs 79.2°c, 8 hrs 75.3°c, 24 hrs 50.9°c / Stainless steel interior and exterior / Cool-touch, no-slip finish / Protective silicone rings for ultimate durability / Two part stopper for smooth pouring. BUY NOW: THERMOS.CO.UK My gripe with this particular genuine Thermos brand flask (watch out for fakes) is that it is plastic on the outside and glass inside. The cups are plastic, too, rather than stainless steel. But like the Stanley it is BPA-free, and it kept liquids hotter than the other Thermos flasks I tried, which were composed primarily of stainless steel. It weighs 890g, which is lightweight considering its vast capacity. Similarly to the likes of the Stanley, I like the aesthetic, and it also has a double wall construction to create a vacuum between the outside environment and inside liquid, helping to keep cold drinks cold or hot. The 750ml capacity holds around three cups of hot coffee (or the equivalent of a chilled bottle of white wine). Founded in 1997, we’re the UK's largest dedicated outdoor clothing and equipment retailer and have been offering our customers unbeatable VALUE for money and outstanding quality for 25 years.

Capacity: 600ml (20.3oz) / Temperature test: 0 hrs 90°c, 90 mins 79.6°c, 4 hrs 66.5°c, 6 hrs 58.3°c, 8 hrs 51.6°c, 24 hrs 22.2°c / Stainless steel construction / Wide mouth opening / KEEP YOUR DRINKS HOTTER FOR LONGER: Made from 304 stainless steel and BPA Free food grade plastic this double walled vacuum insulated flask is designed to keep your tea, coffee or soup hot for up to 12 hours or keep chilled drinks including wine, beer or carbonated drinks cool for up to 6 hours. YOUR INEXPENDABLE COMPANION AT ALL TIMES - The practical KAAVE vacuum flask for on the go, at home, in the office or outdoors. Highly durable thanks to the sturdy handle and bottom. A reliable companion that guides you through the day. Perfect for every tea and coffee enthusiast -Ideal for sharing thanks to 2 cups integrated into the lid - because sharing is caring.Textured coatings are useful – it’s a nice touch to have a handle on a drinks flask but generally, for a one-litre flask, it’s more useful to have a textured coating that provides grip. We hand-washed each flask with hot soapy water and let them air dry overnight, then ranked them on smell. My hot water was 92.3°C at 8:05pm, and by 8:05am it was 57°C – a temperature drop of 35.3°C after 12 hours. It’s still “warm” – just not as warm; and certainly not pipingly hot. My cold water with ice cubes is 5°C at 11:02 and 12 hours later its 3.5°C. Or even What are the Top 10 affordable (best budget, best cheap, or even best expensive!!!) 2 Cup Thermos Flask available? Etc. Button-operated lids are more efficient to use than twist-and-pour stoppers – we found the button-operated lids to be more secure than the twist-and-pour stoppers.

To get maximum performance from your flask, you should always pre-warm it before use. Fill it with boiling water and leave to stand for five minutes or so before emptying and refilling with your chosen brew – such as tea, coffee, soup or hot chocolate. Filling your flask right to the top will also help minimise heat loss. Lifeventure TiV 700 Vacuum Flask

Red Paddle Co manufacture paddle boards, but now they’ve also launched a versatile equipment range, Red Original. The kit can be used by anyone (no paddling required) and their marine-grade stainless steel water bottle is cleverly designed. The higher quality steel means it doesn’t corrode like other metal drinks bottles, and can withstand the elements. Like almost any decent bit of outdoor kit, a good vacuum flask should also be robust and durable. All the flasks we tested are made of high-quality 18/8 food-grade stainless steel that resists dents, dings and scratches. The trade-off with steel flasks is that they can be heavy, although modern designs are shaving weight all the time, and in some cases, they now weigh little more than a standard plastic drinks bottle.
