He became a journalist in 1994, writing predominantly on Warwickshire CCC and Aston Villa for Midlands newspapers.

As a football speaker and commentator Dennis Mortimer can be heard on Aston Villa’s official radio station, whilst his comments and quotes from his presentations as a sports speaker are often printed in national and regional newspapers. Mortimer became an integral part of Villa's midfield and in 1982, captained the side to a 1-0 win over Bayern Munich in the European Cup, which would be the club's first and only European trophy to date.
