Description

Charmed Life arrives in an explosion of magic in this edition illustrated by Alison Bryant and introduced by Katherine Rundell. And since this book went back to the timeframe in between the battles of Badajoz and Salamanca, a lot of the Riflemen, etc. The colour frontispiece and black-and-white scratchboard illustrations capture Sharpe in the midst of the conflict, blood flying from his sabre as he fights for his life.

While Sharpe’s role in the battle to destroy Forts Napoleon and Ragusa as well s the French pontoon bridge over the Tagus River at Almaraz is entirely fictitious, it makes for page-turning reading.

I was fairly disappointed, don’t get me wrong the ending helps to make the book a bit more enjoyable but there are far too many inconsistencies in this book. A series of contemporary thrillers with sailing as a background and common themes followed: Wildtrack published in 1988, Sea Lord (aka Killer's Wake) in 1989, Crackdown in 1990, Stormchild in 1991, and Scoundrel, a political thriller, in 1992. Plausible characters and you get a great perspective on the historical background to a lively period.

He named his chief protagonist Richard Sharpe, a rifleman involved in most major battles of the Peninsular War.

If there's a Tom Garrard and a Tom Gerrard who Sharpe's known since he was a Private, then that's a hell of a coincidence, and an odd choice on Cornwell's part. The TV show always liked to put emphasis on Sharpe and his riflemen, but in the books, they were always a backdrop to the greater South Essex regiment, and the machinations of Wellington's army in Spain. Notwithstanding those minor points, the Sharpe books tend to be centred around successful British actions, which make them successful actions for Sharpe. He's previously portrayed as skillful and is the best shot yet old and frail Now he is literally everywhere.
