Mystery is a big part of both the novel and a childhood at Hailsham. Though there is a sinister cause at the root of most of this mystery, you can’t help but get wrapped up in the students’ excitement at the stories they invent for themselves. These stories are passed down through generations of Hailsham students, becoming more twisted and fantastical with each retelling. James VI of Scotland declared King of England - probably from the market cross in Market Square in "Haylysham". Within the main shopping area in Hailsham, as indicated in the Hailsham & Hellingly Masterplan, [29] the Council aims to improve the quality of shopping facilities. In another section of the book, Kathy refers to the three main characters "letting each other go" after leaving the cottages.Following a government-commissioned report compiled by television's ‘Queen of Shops’ Mary Portas, Hailsham Town Council and the local Chamber of Commerce took the decision in September 2012 to form a Town Team (Hailsham Forward), which was set up to take a closer look at ways to revitalise the town's High Street and surrounding urban environment, increase footfall and spend within the town. [30] Joseph O'Neill from The Atlantic suggested that the novel successfully fits into the coming of age genre. O'Neill writes that "Ishiguro's imagining of the children's misshapen little world is profoundly thoughtful, and their hesitant progression into knowledge of their plight is an extreme and heartbreaking version of the exodus of all children from the innocence in which the benevolent but fraudulent adult world conspires to place them". [10] Adequate educational needs are provided within the town, including evening classes for mature students. Leisure facilities exist for people of all ages and all interests, whether educational, academic, or just pleasure. Many of these have given birth to clubs and societies that cater for specific pursuits and the interests of members and participants.

Chrissie – Another female donor, who is slightly older than the three main characters and was with them at the Cottages. She and her boyfriend, Rodney, were the ones who found Ruth's possible, the person from whom Ruth might have been cloned, and they took Kathy, Tommy, and Ruth to Norfolk. She completes (dies because of her organ donations) before the book ends. County Council Election, 4 June 2009". East Sussex County Council. Archived from the original on 4 June 2009 . Retrieved 7 June 2009. One day, Miss Lucy tries to explain to the students about how tragic and difficult their lives will be once they become donors. However, the students are unable to process the information. Around age sixteen, Tommy and Ruth begin dating each other. Kathy is slightly jealous but tries to hide her feelings for Tommy. A few months after Tommy and Ruth get together, the students graduate from Hailsham and go to live at the Cottage, a more relaxed holding facility where the students are free to drive and otherwise act as they wish. OS Explorer map Eastbourne and Beachy Head Scale: 1:25 000. Publisher:Ordnance Survey – Southampton B2 edition. Publishing Date:2009. ISBN 978 0319240823Like so much of the interaction between the clones and the outside world, only parts of the clones’ understanding is true. Left in the dark about the reason Madame mysteriously appears and selects then removes the best of their art and poetry, the clones fabricate stories and rumours to fill in the gaps. A source of pride in their innocence, the students imagine their art proudly displayed in a gallery run by Madame. Later, Tommy believes art reveals the souls of the creators, and this will be used to validate love and allow a deferral of their processing. Ultimately, the gallery represents lost hope as Tommy and Kathy find out that it was not real and that, although the art was used to try and prove the existence of souls in the clones, it was unsuccessful and causes the final loss of hope. Madame’s Gallery Quotes

Gilbert, son of Gilbert Godseb drowned while bathing in "Haylesham Pond" (now known as the Common Pond.) Kathy relates several anecdotes about Ruth’s pathological lying. At one point, Ruth pretends to be talented at chess when she does not actually know how to play. At another, she pretends that a pencil case was a gift from her favorite teacher when in fact she bought it for herself. Nevertheless, Kathy becomes good friends with her, and when she loses her favorite cassette tape––which features a song called “Never Let Me Go,”––Ruth tries to help her find it.Never Let Me Go is placed into the genre of dystopian narratives, and by which dehumanized creations meekly accept their fate. Although the character of Miss Emily reminds the reader with the idea that Hailsham was meant to be a ‘humane’ method for rearing the clones; a truly paradoxical and oxymoronic phenomenon. Although at the termination of the novel, Hailsham wishes to prove that as a specie, the clones are ‘as sensitive and intelligent as any ordinary human’. Hailsham Market's future assured despite development fear". Sussex Express. Johnston Press Digital Publishing. 25 January 2012. Archived from the original on 31 January 2012 .
