About this deal

There's one major problem with this helmet; you are forced to use the LS2 proprietary communication system. The actuator to work the face shield is located right where you would install any other system. This makes it awkward, if not impossible, to use another system. A smaller, slightly less annoying problem is the small size of the vent controls. They can be difficult to catch with your gloved finger. Specs There are exceptions to this, of course. Touring riders who are part of large groups may need additional features supported by more expensive options. But you won’t need to break the bank if you just want to stay in touch with one or two buddies on a Sunday ride. Range The bluetooth is essentially similar tech to the Sena 10S headset, which is kinda entry level these days. The latest headsets use bluetooth 5.1 and mesh technologies which creates a web of connections for up to 24 riders. Whereas the Savage’s set uses bluetooth 4.1 supporting 4 rider connections. Arai Quantic | The first helmet to be certified to the tougher ECE 22.06 standard, the Quantic offers incredible ventilation and comfort. At the time of writing, it’s one of the very best sport-touring – and all-rounder – motorcycle helmets.

You can see what they thought were the best helmets in our video below, but here are the headline awards: Any honest reviewer will tell you that they can only advise based on their own experience, and that you should take that advice into account –along with your own assessment of fit and affordability –when you choose what to buy. Sena has kept the outside of the helmet nice and clean and minimal. There’s one large jog/dial button (volume/play/pause/pairing/voice config/scan) and a phone button on there (answer/end/speed dial/pairing/radio on/off) and that’s it. Input is using a glove-friendly dial and phone button Nobody can tell YOU what the best helmet is. Not a shop owner, not an influencer, and definitely not a shop-owning influencer. Why, because nobody has worn every single helmet. AGV X101 | The AGV has a chin section that makes it more of a visor-less full-face… there’s no drop-down sun-shield fitted, but retro styling and higher levels of safety than an open-face make this one of our favourite lids for hot weather and looking cool. The original J-Cruise was very well received with hardly any areas of weakness reported. So now it’s on with that difficult follow up: to try and replace the J-Cruise with a helmet that’s even better than the original. There’s even an inflatable donut supplied that you can rest the helmet in upside down while it’s on charge, even though you can easily get to the charging port when it’s stood upright. Shoei have made the sun visor a bit longer than the old J-Cruise too. That’s often welcome as there’s always a few folks saying their sun visor doesn’t drop down low enough (just like we found with the J-Cruise I). Shoei ex-zero | This visor-less retro-styled full-face lid is dearer than the AGV, but it does include a drop-down sun-shield. It’s a close-call between this and the AGV X101 for styling, but judge it on fit and whether you want a sun-shield. I loved wearing this on the Ducati Diavel launch.

HJC C80 | The C80 is both an adventure lid with a peak, and a flip-front. Some Goggles will fit, but it’s not designed for them, and we did find the peak shook at speed on some bikes. Some open-face helmets have a drop-down sunshield that helps protect the eyes, but wind will typically still whip up under these at speed. Really, you’ll need to buy a pair of goggles to wear with an open-face lid. You’ll find a ‘J’ on the label, indicating that it’s homologated as a ‘jet’, or open-face helmet. The Nolan N 40-5 is a bit of a leftfield alternative to think about. It’s cheaper than the Sena, massively versatile (open face helmet all the way to a full face) and is ready to accept Nolan’s N-Com bluetooth system to give an integrated experience just like the Savage. Shoei J-Cruise Corso And if things get colder, those three vents are all 3-way adjustable with a half-open and closed position too, all operated with big glove-friendly sliders. Visor (more about visors) This full-face helmet from AGV attempted to combine the best features of the sport and touring designs. Its carbon and aramid shell is aerodynamically designed like a racing helmet. But inside are many features to keep you cool and comfortable on long rides.

Running along one of the straps is the microUSB charging port, making it easy to get to. It’s not got any weather protection, so while I haven’t had any problems –and open face helmets aren’t the usual choice of all-weather commuters – it’s just worth being aware of, if only to make sure it’s dry before plugging the charger in. You’re going to have gloves on, so the Bluetooth controls need to be straightforward. Buttons should be easy to press and not so close together that you keep hitting the wrong one. That gets frustrating and distracting, which is dangerous when you’re riding. Sizing’s about right too, so measure yourself up, consult our helmet fitment guide, and just buy the right size. And if you ride in glasses, the word from a couple of Savage owners is that they fit in at the sides OK, the only area you might have a problem is that the helmet sits quite low on the head and can push down on the tops of larger glasses, pushing them into the bridge of your nose.

For example, the retro Shoei Glamster’s got an AIM shell and that scored 4 stars out of 5 when tested by SHARP. Same with the Ex Zero and Neotech II– both AIM shells and both 4 star rated. Scorpion helmets are well known for style, quality, and killer value, and the EXO-GT930 EXO-COM Transformer is sure to live up to that standard. A. Most rely on you pairing either a smartphone or an MP3 player, but there are a number that include FM radio. Be careful with the wording: will it receive and play FM radio, or is an FM radio part of the Bluetooth device? Like all helmets, open face helmets come with a list of items to pay particular attention to. More complex than every other type of helmet, knowing what to look for can be the difference between an awesome experience and a terrible one. Look For:A. Maybe, maybe not. If they share the same Bluetooth brand, it should be okay. Also, sometimes two helmet makers might seem to use different Bluetooth brands when they’re actually made by the same company, so pairing might be possible. The problem is that it’s often difficult to find out who makes what, especially with cheaper helmets. Carbon Fibre Carbon Fibre Carbon fibre comes in several weave patterns and can be combined with a plastic resin and molded to form motorcycle helmets.

Integral Sun Visor Integral Sun Visor This is a secondary internal visor that offers the wearer reduced glare from the sun without the need for sunglasses or a tinted outer visor. The Sena Savage works as a great quality classic open face helmet and it works as a bluetooth headset too… mostly. Your main considerations when buying a Bluetooth motorcycle helmet are ease of use, range, talk time, and sound quality. Ease of useAs if that wasn’t enough, Scorpion teamed up with UClear for a top-notch Bluetooth system that is fully integrated into the EXO-GT930 (to keep you fully connected to the rest of the Autobots). All in all then, the J-Cruise II does a good job of making a protective helmet; just not anywhere near as protective as a full face or the safest modulars. Helmet Noise (more about helmet noise)
