About this deal

Then look at how you clean your bike and how that is affecting the lubrication of the freehub system. Campagnolo uses a single freehub design for 9-, 10-, 11- and 12-speed cassettes, while the newest N3W freehub also accepts 13-speed cassettes. That’s in addition to the bearings in the wheel axle, although DT Swiss, for example, moves the right-hand wheel bearing to sit inside the inboard ratchet in its Ratchet EXP hubs, to help shoulder the load. I use a grease that is closer to the specified Shimano grease which is much lighter than Poly 1000 or PM 600.

My XT clutch wasn't smooth and I could feel it catching when the cage was rotated back and forth by hand. The best thing an individual can do is to familiarize themselves with the products on their own bikes first, take a look at the manufacturer’s recommendations, and talk to a reputable bike mechanic. It is most likely that the grease is pushed out of the way when the freehub appears to be working normally; needless to say it is a far better idea not to put it in there in the first place. Once you have a clear view on all of that you can fiddle around with various lubes, change your cleaning method etc.

Unscrew the locknut, then the cone and withdraw the axle assembly, catching the loose balls on a clean rag.

You’ll also need to use a spacer if you want to run an MTB cassette on an 11-speed road freehub, as Shimano/SRAM MTB freehubs are slightly narrower. It appears you've had some water in the freehub by what looks like rust on the inside freehub bearing. As well as lubricating the parts inside, the lube has to cope with any water that makes it past the seal into the pawl cavity. When the bearings are under load, the grease will move out of the way, and the drag effect largely disappears.

Dumonde Tech Freehub Grease performs in a broad temperature range from the heat of summer, to the frigid temperatures of the north. Whereas pawl freehubs have a few discrete points of contact between the ends of the pawls and the teeth with which they mesh, in a ratchet-based system there are a wider number of contact points spread in a ring around the inside of the freehub. We also handed up lots of bottles of plain water simply for Kate to spray on her cassette and around the crank/chainring to offset mud accumulation which can derail (pun intended) even my best efforts to prepare a fast bike.L80 provides a residual lubrication, which is added insurance, combined with savings through less wear and downtime, making it an economical benefit. Chris King claims its system can handle up to three times the torque load of some competitors it’s tested.
